Worship for January 17, 2021

A Prayer for Preparing to Worship:

God of grace, you have given us minds to know you, hearts to love you,
and voices to sing your praise. Fill us with your Spirit,
that we may celebrate your glory and worship you in spirit and truth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Welcome - Jeff Foels

Passing of the Peace

We encourage you to contact others in the church,
to reach out and connect, to check in on those that
might need help,
and to let others know the help you need, in mind, body, and spirit, in this uncertain time.

Prayer of the Day - Shari Durdin

You invite us, O God, to live in your ways, and you give us to each other to know and to love as we journey in this life.
Show us your will for all creation. Help us to listen to your urgings with prayerful hearts so that we may honor what you have made,
in the name of the holy Trinity, one God, now and forever. Amen.

1st Scripture Reading: John 1:43-51 - Shari Durdin

43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you come to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

2nd Scripture Reading: Psalm 139:1-18 - Jeff Foels

O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down,

and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you. For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.

Closing: Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer
Pastor Jeff Foels

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Sending

Wherever you are, and wherever you go, hold this with you:

Be in the world in peace;

Have courage;

Hold onto what is good;

Return no one evil for evil;

Support the weak;

Help the suffering;

Honor all God’s children;

Love and serve the Lord,

Rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

May God, who creates, redeems, and sustains, keep you steadfast in faith,

buoyant in hope, and abounding in love. And the blessing of God, Father, Son,

and Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

Alelluia! Amen.

God bless you while you stay steadfast in His Love!
