Worship for February 7, 2021

A Prayer for Preparing to Worship:

Startle us, O God, with your truth, and open our minds to your Spirit,
that we may be one with Christ our Lord, and serve as your faithful disciples,
through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Welcome - Jeff Foels

Passing of the Peace

We encourage you to contact others in the church,
to reach out and connect, to check in on those that
might need help,
and to let others know the help you need, in mind, body, and spirit, in this uncertain time.

Call to Confession, Prayer of Confession, and Assurance of Pardon

Let us confess our sins before God, our help in times of trouble.

Loving God, we have asked for your righteous judgment against others, but we have not acknowledged the sin in our own lives.
We have worshiped you with our lips, but have dishonored you with our actions.
We have prayed for you to end the suffering in our world, yet we have not practiced compassion and generosity toward others.
Forgive our self-righteousness and give us integrity of heart, that we may shine forth the light of your salvation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

In mercy God forgives us our sin and grants us genuine repentance through the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and set free to live the new life.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen. Amen.

Prayer of the Day - Gordon Dosher

Faithful God, you have appointed us to be your witnesses, to be light that shines in the world.

Let us not hide the bright hope you have given us, but tell everyone your love, revealed in Jesus Christ the Lord,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

1st Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40:21-31- Gordon Dosher

21 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23 who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25 To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. 27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30 Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31 but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

2nd Scripture Reading: Mark 1:29-39 - Jeff Foels

29As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once.

31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons.

33And the whole city was gathered around the door.

34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.

36And Simon and his companions hunted for him.

37When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.”

38He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.”

39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Closing: Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer
Pastor Jeff Foels

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Wherever you are, and wherever you go, hold this with you:

Be in the world in peace;

Have courage;

Hold onto what is good;

Return no one evil for evil;

Support the weak;

Help the suffering;

Honor all God’s children;

Love and serve the Lord,

Rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

May God, who creates, redeems, and sustains, keep you steadfast in faith,

buoyant in hope, and abounding in love. And the blessing of God, Father, Son,

and Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

Alelluia! Amen.
